Live review: Cody Pennington - Fleece Bristol, 30/11/22

Born and raised Nashvillian Cody Pennington, who is starting to make waves in the country music scene, brought his Country Music Show tour to Bristol’s Fleece.

Former United States Royal Air Force member and ex-lawyer Cody gave up his day job (actually quit the same week after selling a substantial amount of gig tickets) cut his teeth on the Nashville circuit and the UK is starting to catch on. In this show, he is singing the songs of his heroes and influences and is giving the audience a boot-stompin’ good time that Dolly Parton would be proud of.

Featured on the set list are songs by Luke Combs, Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers and Zac Brown Band. Plus, a beautiful rendition of ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ by Chris Stapleton, finished off nicely with the band’s own spin that took it to church and then to a stadium, in Cody’s own words. The packed crowd, donning check shirts, trucker caps and tassels to get in the mood, are all beaming faces lit up from the stage and singing along to every word. The country scene is definitely alive in Bristol.

He is also treating us to a couple of originals, ‘Waiting’ and ‘Downtown’; the former being a sweet and catchy story-telling tune and the latter bringing the sing-along party vibes. Lyrics ‘we don’t need sleep, we just need a drink when we’re downtown’ are the perfect fit for this setting with everyone singing along and forgetting it’s not the weekend.

Bristol, and the rest of the UK, would be lucky to have Cody back again. Fingers crossed for more originals too as tonight is testament that the guy has no trouble filling a venue.
