Albums review: Sick N’ Beautiful - ‘Starstruck’

Words by David Roux (frontman with Outlaw Orchestra)

If you are familiar with Sick N’ Beautiful, then you will know that visually they are a feast for the eyes; five individual characters bringing the rock’n’roll space circus to the earthling metal world. An intergalactic meteoric explosion of sound for all your senses.

If Prince had turned his genius hand to metal and he had stepped aboard the Sick’n’Beautiful Mothership BFS900 (their space ship which crash landed in Italy, where the band hails from) then these might just have been the resulting eleven tracks.

This third album is a huge production with consummate technical abilities of all band members. Shredding solos, pace changes, clever chord changes, double bass drumming and above all soaring vocals provided by the captivating Herma Sick at the helm.  It is a meticulously well recorded performance that deserves several listens to appreciate every single detail.

It is easy to tag the band as industrial metal, alternative, grunge, punk pop and electronica but several plays will expose so many influences and styles that demonstrate the brilliance of this band.

Stand out tracks; Tonight We Go To War, Starstruck, Drop It 2 The B and the wonderfully titled Ytopynonavevanonypoty which brings the fury akin to Judas Priest’s Painkiller.

The collection of videos that accompany this album just take the listener to another level. Sure the band rely upon their visual image and stage presence to make sure that every person who attends their circus will never forget the show, however the music stands solid without even laying eyes upon these five super terrestrials.

It is truly a beautifully crafted album that not only weaves together a piece of almost every genre from 1988 to present day, but also it will appeal to aged rockers and teenage metal-heads. The album is a journey or a cosmic sonic trip - call it a vacation for the mind.
