Fonzy & Company - 'Last Birth'
Words by Charles Patterson
Fonzy & Company, The Bristolian indie/alternative four-piece who say their influences include Green Day and Chris Cornell, are releasing their debut EP,Last Birth, after forming only in February this year.
Those influences are prevalent across the half-dozen tracks on this EP, but more towards the slower end of the spectrum, reminiscent of Green Day’s 21 Guns or Foo Fighters' Learn To Fly.
Opener The Stubborn and the Brave leans towards a noughties indie sound with infectious guitar and strong vocals, while Sue Me rumbles along nicely, starting slow with echoing backing vocals and a melodic chorus that's followed by some soothing summery guitar jangles.
Queen of Nothing is the EP's standout track – a heavier offering with catchy lyrics and a rhythm that will stick with you for hours. However, variety is a good thing and the intro to Silk is a stark contrast to the previous track, starting slowly and softly but quickly ascending to heady heights with screaming guitars. It shows just how capable the band is of going from 0-60 in the blink of an eye.
Pieces would slot nicely on any radio playlist while Without Regret shifts into something completely different – very similar to some of The Rifles' stripped-back offerings and those female backing vocals come to the fore again.
It’s a solid debut and it raises just one question – what more are this band capable of with a few more months in the studio under their belt? Based on this collection, it's something we should all be looking forward to finding out.
