Dead Royalties - Phantom Hearts

Words by Anselm Anderson

Dead Royalties are a three piece art-rock / punk band from Bristol consisting of Xander Share (vocals/guitar), Sam Shutler ( drums) and Kal Kelly on bass.

Their debut EP Phantom Hearts is an intriguing combination of eerie electronic mixes, crunchy guitars and contorted vocals that flicker between soft to eccentric. The lyrics range from topical to quirky, while the musical quality is rich and boisterous with plenty of ethos. Their brand of music is big and in your face, which will leave your head spinning and feet stomping.
The self-titled opener is a full- throttle track with heavy guitar riffs and a hint of macabre. The chord structures and musical patterns shift like a mechanical spider crawling up your spine that lead the listener down an unexpected path of fun.
Carnivore Carnival Carousel is a delightfully hypnotic cacophony of indie rock and unconventional stylings, while Cosmic Creatures is bombastic pop -tinged rock with uplifting guitar pedal effects.
Heckling Hitmen is the heaviest track with a mix of psychedelic electronica starts with a bone shuddering riff and distorted vocals.
And finally, Poltergeist Heist is like a gothic horror film about  eighties’ art rock with wavering vocal lines and spooky female vocal samples.
Phantom Hearts is a combination of different rock sub genres with plenty of twists and catchy songs to keep the listener amused. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what they want to be, but it will be fun finding out.
