Bristol’s Bierkeller is far from packed tonight as it awaits the arrival of one of 80s rock’s most notable voices, Graham Bonnet.
On his last visit to the city he was greeted with a sold out venue, so it’s surprising to see the masses haven’t turned out. However, he gets straight into it with All Night Long from his Rainbow days and hit Night Games within the first three songs. Combined with a well-honed stage presence and British gent banter, this has a hold on the crowd.
Vocal-wise, he is living up to his name of one of the loudest voices in rock; the harmonies are relentless and note perfect. For fans to be able to sing along to songs so prevalent during his heyday is something special.
The band are on top form too, including former Alcatraz band mate Jimmy Waldo on keyboards and the mesmerising Bassist Beth-Ami Heavenstone, who Bonnet describes as his best friend.
They’re doing justice to hits from his former guises, with influences of Michael Schenker and Steve Vai remaining strong. Bonnet reminisces about being sacked from The Michael Schenker Group for revealing himself onstage…but at least they can laugh about it now.
Graham isn’t afraid to give the crowd what they want and doesn’t steer clear of the glory days. He happily belts out that impressive melodic range and is still good for it. Let’s hope that momentum stays for as long as possible.
