Bristol’s Bierkeller is the surprisingly small venue waiting on the arrival of some big names in rock tonight; Inspired by Dio, when Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy and Def Leppard had a baby and named it Last In Line.

Preceding them is a big name in rock, to come. Inglorious are already causing a stir on radio stations and festival line-ups and to see the way they light up the stage is no surprise.  Nathan James’ larger than life voice belts out songs from their first and only self-titled release, plus covers from Rainbow and Whitesnake in a way that would make David Coverdale green with envy. A blend of commanding vocals, technically challenging yet harmonic guitar solos delivered to perfection and drum skills that are exhausting to watch. It’s exciting to know that a new album (produced by Kevin Shirley no less), is just around the corner.

Up next is Dio’s baby, now fronted by vocalist Andrew Freeman (formerly The Offspring), who has huge shoes to fill, but proves his worth and holds his own. With anthems such as Holy Diver, We Rock and obviously Last in Line in their set, Freeman’s voice is matched by the energy and thunderous delivery the rest of the band give, perfectly. This fairly tame crowd, considering the head-bang-worthiness of the night, might just be testament to their mesmerising show. To witness this collective talent onstage is a marvel and even for the most fair-weather fan, it’s an evening of great music that should be treasured.
