It’s semi-finals time in the Bristol chapter of Metal 2 The Masses 2015, this time held at The Exchange, as acts hope to win a slot at this year’s Bloodstock Festival. With headliners like Rob Zombie, Within Temptation, Trivium and Opeth, it’s a much coveted place. At this point the standard is high and, unfortunately, only two bands can go any further than this; the crowd will have a hard task on their hands to decide on a worthy winner.
Not only is this a ‘competition’, to prove you rock enough to showcase your band at the festival, but it’s a chance for crowds to come and see some great, home-grown original music. Up tonight are Kinasis, Bangover, Embodiment and Ascaris. Each with a short set of four songs to prove their worth, they have to be on top of their game. Some even have props, with Christmas crackers and a stomping ‘mummy’ covered in loo roll both making an appearance.
This small, dark, subterranean-looking venue is the perfect place to get immersed in sound, each band gradually drawing a crowd that crept closer from the back of the room. If you get a mosh going, you know you’re really doing well.
Judged by voting forms, the bands won’t know who is through to the next stages until July. After which, the finals will be panel judged and held at The Fleece.
Represented through metal, this event is an example of triumph for Bristol’s eclectic music scene and a chance to get involved and support it.
