The Strays, a garage-rock band from Cheltenham, were formed in 2016 when acoustic duo Vocalist Stel and Guitarist Sam met drummer Gaz . Inspired by the vintage rockabilly scene, the trio have been working tirelessly with over a 100 gigs in 2017, including supporting festival line-ups with Dr Feelgood, before becoming a four piece late last year when bassist Krisz joined. Debut EP Wham, Bam, Thank you Ma’am deserves a follow up and now they’re about to release their latest offering Brand New Day.
The EP presents around twenty minutes of rambunctious, vibrant and loud rock ‘n’roll, combining intelligent lyrics, impressive guitars and addictive pop hooks that will leave you swinging. The title track is a hip-shaking dosage of old- school rockabilly, with screeching guitar lines and a catchy chorus, while Too Bad is a dark and guitar- driven track that entices the listener with its signature lung busting vocals; Stel’s versatile range envelopes a variety of emotions throughout.
Go Go Boy is up-tempo and fun with a tantalising riff and Black Swan is more bluesy, being another example of how to write a catchy riff and convey a narrative.
The River is a steady, country-fringed song with eerie backing vocals supplementing the dark tone.
Let’s hope The Strays don’t wander too far are here to stay for a while yet.
