Falling Nine - 'Sustain and Release'

Words by Paul Brigstock
Cardiff rock band Falling Nine formed in 2003, started by Lead Singer and Guitarist David Lydiard. After joining forces with Steve Watts (Bass and Rhythm Guitar) and Rob Hollands (Lead Guitar), they have four releases under their belt.

Reminiscent of mid-to-late-nineties up-and-coming bands, their latest EP ‘Sustain and Release’ has a raw yet energetic quality, packed with tight harmonies and catchy choruses. All tracks could do with being a minute shorter, as the shortest track on this EP comes in at 3:48. Not the most radio friendly, melodic rock EP to cross the desk.

Track ‘Do it’ really cuts through the mould and with a few tweaks could be a real summer smasher and festival favourite. The use of drum samples, low and heavy, chunky guitars in the vein of Marilyn Manson’s ‘Beautiful People’, mixed with melodic lead parts and a pure rock vocal, does raise this track a step above the other three on this EP.

‘Hollow’ is filled out with a chorus of harmonies and is clearly made for fans of the heavier side of the Goo Goo Dolls, with a hint of Phil Collins about the vocals (which is definitely a good thing). Track Nightmare’ has its great points, but doesnt stand out as much as the rest by far.
‘Crucified’ has a film soundtrack air about it, ending Sustain and Release on an uplifting note. This has American summer teen-thriller driving scene written all over it.

Nobody is saying that Sustain and Release will change lives, save starving children or create a riotous underground movement. But, what it will do is make your morning drive far less tedious and offer you some catchy tunes with unique vocals and a great level of musicianship.
