The Dead Daises - O2 Academy Oxford, 4th November 2021

Words by Adrian Ball

Oxford’s O2 Academy has become the rock ‘n’ roll centre of the universe on this cold and dark November night – but do this post-covid crowd know just how much they are about to get their minds completely blown?

The Quireboys are first to hit the stage; Spike strutting and the guys tearing it up to really get the crowd going.  It’s a great set of their classics, which is ending with the ultimate sing-a-long song 7 O’Clock.

The crowd - now glowing from the exciting set and vocal chords fully lubricated - are ready for the Dead Daises to don the spotlight.  With a new, formidable line-up of Glenn Hughes, Doug Aldrich, David Lowry and Tommy Clufetos, here is a band with a spectacular pedigree of talent and a back catalogue of songs that is hard to match.

A lighting spectacular illuminates the academy ahead of the band’s entrance. The crowd is chattering with anticipation and the band is ready to entertain.  OpenerUnspoken sets the performance bar high but it is leapt over repeatedly with songs like MexicoHustle and Flow, Midnight Moses.

Songs from the new album Holy Ground are at the forefront, with older DD tracks added to an immense set-list.  With former Deep Purple frontman now at the helm, there is a stunning rendition of DP’s Mistreated and (fingers crossed and it happened) ultimate classic Burn.  Other high points include the cover of CCR’sFortunate Son, which is done complete justice with a, respectfully executed, high-energy facelift.

The chemistry among the band is electric, especially the relationship between Doug and Glenn.  They are obviously enjoying being back out touring and the crowd are as equally as excited to rock the night away in Oxford.
