Glenn Hughes / Stone Broken - The Fleece Bristol, 02/02/17

Wherever someone like Glenn Hughes is performing, you’ll find the weathered rockers who were there the first time round, spouting stories of the glory days. When a band like Stone Broken are supporting, it’s refreshing to hear the conversation steer towards new music and how important it is.
That’s what’s happening tonight at Bristol’s Fleece, where the queue is around the block before the doors open. It’s packed when SB hits the stage and the great thing is everyone is into it. Working with a less than brilliant sound desk, they lure the crowd into a captivating half-hour set including Wait For Youand Stay All Night, which have had a lot of radio play. Talk about proving your worth to a die-hard rock crowd, they did it no problem.
Next are Glenn and his band of merry Scandinavian men, looking ever the sauntering rockers with an imposing aptitude to back it up. Flamboyant as ever in his neck scarf and dark glasses, he seems totally in his comfort zone. Likely to be much needed for him with his mum passing away just yesterday, but he soldiers on and delivers a passionate and pitch-perfect performance.
Not disappointing the expectant crowd with his multi-octave impressiveness, he’s positively spoiling them with tunes from Deep PurpleBlack Country Communion (endearingly changing the lyrics to ‘West Country’) and finishing with a mighty version of Burn, which is an absolute joy to watch.
This larger than life rock star in a humble guise is signing off from the UK leg of the tour with love, gratitude and humility. Let’s hope it’s not so long until he graces us with his presence again.
