A long awaited and much appreciated tour from the rock ‘n’roll masters Rival Sons, playing the tenth anniversary of the Pressure and Time album, is in Sheffield tonight. In support is a new band to UK shores, Dirty Honey, with their mix of rock swagger and a good dose of blues.
Dirty Honey kicked off the night creating a party atmosphere from the very beginning and it was obvious from the crowd’s reaction they have already bought into the band and constantly showed appreciation with sing-a-longs and cheering. Kicking off proceeds with ‘Gypsy’ building the enthusiasm through the set until ending on a high with the hip swaying, head nodding ‘Rolling 7s’. Get ready to see plenty more of this band.
Rival Sons is a class act taking all the raw ingredients and influences, blending them up into a magical sound like no other. Jay “the bird that sings” Buchanan is on top form delivering vocals on point, controlling centre stage as the audience is taken on a magical journey first through the Pressure and Time album and then into a selection of the many other catalogue highlights. The climax is in the amazing and heavier than expected new song ‘Nobody Wants to Die’.
Scott Holiday’s playing is eqsuisite with gorgeous riffs, Michael Miley is playing a blinding set along with Dave Beste and Todd Ogren showing the world how a show should be presented for an audience.
Here is a band that takes you along on a journey and holds your attention throughout, the only difficulty is who and where to watch. Set highlights were ‘Pressure and Time’, the stunning ‘Shooting Stars’, ‘Feral Roots’…..No, you know what? They were all outstanding. What a set.
