The Bath Forum tonight is like stepping back in time; the art deco ceiling, the musty air, the man selling ice creams – it’s all very charming. And perfectly suited to the sophisticated evening that lies ahead, courtesy of Jack Savoretti.
The multi-cultural background music that is leading people to their seats sets the tone; we’re in for a treat of cross-European-American musical pick ’n’ mix that is Jack’s life.
The equally multi-cultural band (hailing from all across Europe) takes the stylishly lit stage, suited and booted, starting with the latest single Candlelight from Singing to Strangers, which is an orchestral delight performed brilliantly with the violin and bass leading the way. Jack’s subtle crooning then sudden bursts of gravel-toned power adds to the drama.
What More Can I Do is about the trials of married life, even though he has a very happy one, much to the dislike of his female fan base judging by the silent reaction of his love story.
He shows ultimate humility and enjoyment of his own band, especially during Soldier’s Eye when playing alongside Phillip Granell, who he described as like seeing a shooting star.
There are funny anecdotes, heart-warming stories and tearful tales, most of which are stories of why the songs were written. One example being his five-year-old daughter describing her dad’s job to a friend as ‘he travels the world singing to strangers’ – and there’s the next album.
Tie Me Down, from 2015’s Written in Scars, touches the spirituality in everyone as Jack dedicates the song to everyone, from all walks of life, unifying the room no matter what their background.
It also gets the (mostly female) audience literally dancing in the aisles. Although, that’s not to say the guy wearing a Stones t-shirt in the front row isn’t resisting busting some moves.
On leaving the auditorium, whispers of ‘but, what is it?’ when contemplating Jack’s musical style can be heard. And they’re right - is it pop? Soft rock? Is he a crooner or raspy-toned troubadour? Maybe the answer is Written in Scars…..
