Stryper - ‘God Damn Evil’

Words by Anselm Anderson
Stryper has returned with their tenth studio release God Damn Evil via Frontiers Music SRL, which is the follow- up to 2013’s No More Hell To Pay. This promised to be their heaviest album yet, and it looks like they’ve kept that promise.
Michael Sweet’s imperishable vocals continually improve with age and he only adds to this impressive performance of pure, unadulterated heaviness filled with high octane riffage, intelligent lyrical content and powerful song writing that will leave any hardened metal fan on their knees.
Opener Take it to The Cross is the heaviest track on the album with  guest vocals by Matt Banchard (Shadows Fall) , whose death growls and metal screams add an intensity, which may appeal to a newer and younger audience.
Lost and also the title track have the ingredients of an 80’s metal diet with Sweet’s falsetto cries that provide gravitas, alongside Oz Fox’s harmonic guitar lines that should keep fists pumping. Perry Richardson pounding bass is in perfect symmetry with Richard Sweet’s pummelling drumbeats. The most impressive feature is the musical craftsmanship; each track knows how to keep the listener interested.
The Devil Doesn’t Live Here is a high tempo of sizzling solos, The Valley is an evocative track that allows Sweet’s harmonic vocal range to intensify, while Can’t Live Without You shows Stryper are still fully accustomed when it comes to writing ballads.
